Australian 50 Cent Coin Mintages

The Australian firsty cent features the platypus on the reverse as designed by Stuart Devlin. It has been minted with all 3 portraits of Queen Elizabeth II used to date, designed in turn by Arnold Machin, Raphael Maklouf and Ian Rank-Broadley. The 50 cent was first issued at the changeover to decimal currency in 1966. At this time it was a round, 80% silver coin and within a year began to be removed from circulation because the silver content exceeded the face value. The 50 cent was not minted in 1967 and 1968 and in 1969 re-appeared as the copper-nickel dodecagonal coin we're used to seeing today. The Australian 50 cent has been minted at the Royal Australian Mint in Canberra, The Royal Mint London, the Royal Canadian Mint in Winnipeg, and Llantrisant in Wales.
